CE/NR - Digital and Field Technologies for Coastal Environmental Studies

Introduction to Remote Sensing

The purpose of this module is to become familiar with the ERDAS Imagine image processing software system. A definition of remote sensing imagery, along with example imagery taken in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, is described. Resolution aspects of remote sensing imagery, in terms of spectral, spatial, radiometric and temporal information, are covered. Types of applications using remote sensing data are illustrated. Data sets are used with the Imagine software to make measurements from the imagery, display spectral plots of selected earth features, and to display the imagery in various band combinations to enhance earth features.
